OSCAR STRASNOY

Oscar Strasnoy is an Argentine-French composer, conductor and pianist born on November 12, 1970 in Buenos Aires.

He studied piano, conducting and composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de Buenos Aires, the Conservatoire de Paris and the Hochschule für Musik Frankfurt with Guillermo Scarabino, Gérard Grisey and Hans Zender. He won the "Premier Prix de composition" (final exam) at the Conservatoire de Paris.

From 1996 to 1998 he was the Music Director of the Orchestre du Crous de Paris. He has received numerous grants and commissions (Mozarteum Argentino, Argentine Government, French Government, Fondation Nadia Boulanger...). In 2000 he was invited by Peter Eötvös to attend the Herrenhaus Edenkoben in Germany. Luciano Berio awarded him the Premio Orpheus in 2000 for his opera MIDEA, which was produced at the Teatro Caio Melisso in Spoleto (September 2000) and at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (March 2001). He has also been composer in residence at the Akademie Schloß Solitude in Stuttgart (2001-02). His compositions have been performed in Europe, Australia, Japan, North and South America. In 2003 he had a six-month residency at the "Villa Kujoyama" in Kyoto, Japan. 
Recent commissions include Geschichte, based on the text by Witold Gombrowicz, directed by Galin Stoev (a commissioned work for the Fromm Music Foundation/Harvard University). 2004: Six songs for the unquiet traveller for Anne Murray with text by Alberto Manguel for the Wigmore Hall London in 2004: Louvre Auditorium, Paris - live music to accompany a screening of the classic film Underground (UK 1928) directed by Anthony Asquith. FABULA (2005), an opera for a singer, a viola player and an actor (Festival Eclat, Stuttgart, 2007). In 2006 he was an artist in residence at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy. He is the recipient of a 2007 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for Music Composition.

In 2009, he is composer in residence at Festival des Arcs, France.

His next projects include an opera for the Staatsoper Hamburg, Le bal, based on I. Némirovsky's novel, directed and adapted by Matthew Jocelyn, conducted by Simone Young, an opera for the Ruhr Festspiele written by H.M.Enzensberger, La boite and two orchestra pieces for Radio France ("Incipit" and "Y" from his cycle "Sum").

He lives in Lyon and Berlin.
