AURÉLIEN DUMONT

Aurélien Dumont was born in 1980 in northern France. He has a doctorate in musical composition in the SACRe program of École Normale Supérieure de Paris, Université Paris Science et Lettres and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he has studied with Gérard Pesson. He also studied at IRCAM in cursus 1 and 2 in composition and computer music.

His music questions the concept of "alterity" as defined by the philosopher François Jullien, as a possible way to understand the complexity of our contemporary world. Working with other artists, opening to Japanese culture and music of the past, the crystallization of social issues and developing a close electronic sound design pose the aesthetic foundations of a music that arises by tensioning objects designed in « bricks languages » (Roland Barthes).

Aurélien Dumont has won several international competitions (Pierre Cardin Prize awarded by the French Institut, Hervé Dugardin and Georges Enesco prizes by SACEM, San Fedele Prize in Milan, Takefu International Music Festival Prize, GRAME’s new forum jeune création Prize, Salabert Foundation Prize, etc.)

His works, which cover a wide range of chamber music to opera, are played worldwide by renowned performers (Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Recherche, Quatuor Diotima, Sonar Quartett, Ensemble Linea, Ensemble Itinéraire, Ensemble KNM Berlin, Ensemble 2e2m, Ensemble Mozaik, Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, Ensemble Adapter, Ensemble Next Mushroom Promotion, Ensemble Muromachi, Ensemble les Cris de Paris, Ensemble Aedes).

His first monographic disc "While", published by NoMad music label in September 2015, was praised by critics and received Coup de Coeur by Académie Charles Cros. His second monographic disc "Stillness", a portrait by Ensemble Linea directed by Jean-Philippe Wurtz, was released by the American label Odradek in January 2018.

Aurélien Dumont is composer in residency at Théâtre de Cornouaille - National Theater of Quimper, for the 2015-2017 seasons and in 2018 composer in residency with Ensemble 2e2m as well as resident of the French Academy at the Villa Medici in Rome.

He lives and works in Paris and Tokyo.
