Possible Places does not express utopia, but the search for places to create and express oneself. In our world, past and present, human beings migrate and leave their homeland, often more by compulsion than by choice. Artists are among them, and many composers leave their homelands for other horizons. This concert brings together composers from a wide range of backgrounds, who contribute to the diversity and richness of modern musical creation.
Aurel Stroë, a composer of Romanian origin who only returned to his country after the fall of the Communist regime, left behind a magnificent violin concerto that will be performed by Noëmi Schindler, the violinist who premiered the piece. Farnaz Modarresifar, Iranian composer and santûr player, draws on traditional Iranian music to compose new music rich in timbre and sound ideas. Russian composer Dmitri Kourliandski fled his country after the outbreak of war in Ukraine and has since been living in France, as has Italian composer Giulia Lorusso, who has been living in Paris since she arrived in 2015 to study at the Paris Conservatoire.
In a pre-concert talk (45 minutes), composer Bernard Cavanna will discuss the work and career of Romanian artist Aurel Stroë.
The aim of this discussion is to show how the social and political context has influenced the life and work of a composer.
How can Aurel Stroë's experience of exile resonate today with artists such as Farnaz Modarresifar and Dmitri Kourliandski?
This talk will be based on extracts from the documentary co-directed with Bernard Cavanna and Laurence Pietrezak.
Hugo Lioret, in charge of audience relations at 2e2m, will lead the discussion.
This concert will also give rise to a recording of Aurel Stroë's Violin Concerto on the Empreinte Digitale label.
